What is a Doula?

A doula offers support to the laboring mother and partner. A doula helps the mother through labor, birth and the immediate postpartum period. Labor is often very unpredictable and is often different for every person so having someone there who is skilled and knowledgable in birth is a great comfort. Sometimes all someone needs is a little encouragement during a vulnerable moment, others might need help managing the contractions, while some simply need a quiet confidence sitting in the room. The number one thing I hear from my clients is, "I couldn't have done it without you." I know I felt this way about my doula and she kindly told me, "yes, you could have." My job as a doula is never taken lightly and is so humbling. Birth is the most transforming day of someone's life and to be invited into this sacred space is such an honor.
